Willmar, Minn., woman announces candidacy for state House

Mary Sawatzky has been endorsed by the DFL to run in House 17B. She will have a primary challenger. Jessica Rohloff has announced she plans to continue her campaign and run in the primary.

WILLMAR -- Mary Sawatzky of Willmar has announced her candidacy for the Minnesota House in District 13B.

Sawatzky, 50, a teacher in the Willmar School District, will run as a Democrat. The seat is currently held by Rep. Bruce Vogel, R-Willmar.

Sawatzky said she is running because she thinks the Legislature needs different leadership and she hopes to be a voice for rural Minnesota.

The school funding shift used to balance the state budget last year led to "balancing the budget at the expense of our children with no plan to pay it back," she said.

Sawatzky said her decision to run is the culmination of years of involvement in community and political activities. She is currently president of the Willmar chapter of Education Minnesota.

Sawatzky is married and has two grown sons.
