Bird Island is looking to contract with co. for cop service

OLIVIA -- The city of Bird Island wants to contract with the Renville County Sheriff's Office for law enforcement services, Sheriff Scott Hable on Tuesday told the County Board of Commissioners.

The decision follows months of discussions within the city over whether to eliminate its police department and contract for services.

The city would like to begin contracting for services as early as May 1.

Hable said a July 1 start-up date is more likely. The sheriff's office will need to acquire additional equipment to begin the service.

The city of Morton currently contracts with the sheriff's office for law enforcement services. The existing contract with Morton will serve as the basis for a contract with Bird Island.

The sheriff said there will be additional discussions with Bird Island to identify how the service will be provided. Morton contracts for 20 hours of service each week at an hourly rate.

The commissioners must approve a contract with Bird Island for the service to be offered.

The commissioners noted that the recent decision by Bird Island will likely lead other communities to consider the same.
