Willmar Food Shelf receives record donations during annual food drive

WILLMAR -- The Willmar Area Food Shelf finished its annual food drive last week with a record number of donations.

The Food Shelf received 69,238 pounds of food and raised $103,976 in cash donations through the food drive, part of the statewide Minnesota FoodShare campaign.

"We are so thankful to the community for their continued support," said Christie Kurth, executive director of the Willmar Area Food Shelf.

The donations will go toward feeding the nearly 800 people who use the Food Shelf each month, according to Kurth.

This year, the Willmar Area Food Shelf will also have four volunteers honored as WCCO Good Neighbors. Volunteers David Peterson, Forrest Honebrink, Vickie Vogt and Randy and Verna Donner will all be honored at the 2012 March Campaign luncheon on April 23 in Brooklyn Park.

The four volunteers were chosen based on 150-word essays that the Food Shelf submitted. Each of them commits a lot of volunteer hours to the Food Shelf and deserves the award, Kurth said.
