The heat is on: heat advisory this afternoon for southern Minnesota

WILLMAR -- The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory for 1 to 8 p.m. today for most of southern Minnesota, the Twin Cities metro area and west central Wisconsin.

By the afternoon, the combination of heat and humidity will create heat indices between 100 and 110 degrees and increase the risk for heat-related illness.

Temperatures are expected to be in the 90s to around 100 degrees.

Those who work or spend time outside are advised to reschedule strenuous activities to the early morning or the evening, wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing, drink plenty of water and know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

The weather service urges people to drink lots of fluids, stay in an air conditioned place, stay out of the sun and check up on relatives and neighbors.
