Raymond woman sentenced in fatal crash near Litchfield

WILLMAR -- A 45-year-old Raymond woman was sentenced Monday to 58 months in prison, which was stayed, 180 days in the county jail, 200 hours of community work service and 10 years of probation on two felony charges of criminal vehicular homicide or operation stemming from a Nov. 20, 2010, crash south of Litchfield that claimed the lives of two people.

Ronda Lynn Malvin was also ordered to pay $1,500 in fines and $1,021 in restitution as part of her sentence handed down by District Judge Donald M. Spilseth in Meeker County District Court. Additional conditions include that she follow the recommendations of a chemical use assessment and a mental health evaluation, not use or possess alcohol or drugs, not enter liquor establishments and attend a MADD impact panel.

As part of a plea agreement, six additional felony charges, plus two gross misdemeanors, stemming from the crash along State Highway 22, were dismissed.

Malvin pleaded guilty to the two charges on May 8 and admitted that she attempted to brake during icy road conditions and lost control, causing the vehicle to enter the oncoming lane of traffic and setting off a three-car collision. Two passengers in her vehicle, Kimberly Mead, 44, of Willmar, and Barbara Wold, 55, of Spicer, died as result of injuries suffered in the crash.

Mead was dead at the scene and Wold died two days later from her injuries. Malvin also admitted that she had used drugs two days before the crash and that urine testing showed both amphetamine and methamphetamine in her system.

Two other passengers in Malvin's vehicle, the driver of the oncoming vehicle and both the driver and passenger of the third vehicle were all injured in the crash.

The driver of a fourth vehicle was not hurt, but drove off the roadway to avoid the collision.
