WILLMAR -- A groundbreaking ceremony for a $272,358 addition to the Kandiyohi County Historical Society's Museum in Willmar will take place today at 1 p.m. in front of the museum.

Pre-construction preparation began on Monday when the one-room school was moved to another area on the site to make room for the addition, said Jill Wohnoutka, director of the museum.

Once the ground is officially broken the project will begin in earnest and could be completed by February or March.

The project includes a 1,700-square-foot, multi-purpose community room on the west side of the museum with seating for 100 people.

The space will be used primarily for educational programs associated with the museum but would be available for any community use, Wohnoutka said.

Carlson Construction of Willmar is the primary contractor for the project, which will cost $247,598 to build.

There are non-construction costs of $24,760.

Besides the $60,000 the Historical Society has in the bank, Kandiyohi County is contributing $100,000 to the project and the city of New London is donating $1,000.

Wohnoutka is waiting to hear whether other cities in the county, including Willmar, will budget money for the addition.

Requests for funds were also made to foundations, businesses and private individuals.
