Three arrested in Pope County arson, theft cases

GLENWOOD -- Three suspects were arrested Thursday in connection with a string of crimes this fall that included a cabin fire near Lowry, the theft of a fish house and other items from the cabin site, and vandalism at the Prairie Lake Cooperative in Lowry.

The Pope County Sheriff's Office said two of the suspects, ages 23 and 17, are from Alexandria. The third suspect, a 19-year-old, is from Garfield.

All three are expected to be charged with arson, burglary, felony theft and criminal damage to property, the Sheriff's Office said Friday.

The fire was reported Oct. 16 at a cabin on Lake Reno near Lowry. The Pope County Sheriff's Office investigated and determined that arson was the cause. The cabin's owners also reported the theft of a fish house and gas grill.

Deputies found tire tracks and other evidence left behind at the scene. Similar tire tracks were found at Prairie Lake Co-op in Lowry, where a soybean bag had been cut open. Blood evidence also was found at the scene.

Following information received by the West Central Minnesota Narcotics Task Force, task force agents and Pope County sheriff's deputies questioned the three suspects and ended up arresting two of them, ages 23 and 19. Both are in custody at the Douglas County Jail. The 17-year-old, who is still a juvenile, was left in parental custody.

The Sheriff's Office said the vehicle allegedly used in the crime has been recovered, as was the fish house and other items.

The Alexandria Police Department, Douglas County Sheriff's Office and Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension assisted in the investigation.

WILLMAR -- Responding to an early morning report of a possible break-in at a Willmar apartment building, Willmar police arrested a 34-year-old suspect Friday in connection with the incident.

The attempted break-in was reported shortly after 1 a.m. in the 400 block of 15th Avenue Southwest. The suspect is being held on charges of first-degree burglary and criminal damage to property.
