Life Connections 2015: Outstanding senior, nonprofit named
WILLMAR — Joan “Jo’’ Holm received the 2015 Outstanding Senior Award, sponsored by West Central Sanitation of Willmar, during the West Central Tribune’s 16th annual Life Connections event Friday at the Willmar Civic Center.
Holm was nominated for the award because “she gets involved in about every project possible.’’ Holm, who retired from nursing after 45 years, knows many people in the area. She was active in the Kandiyohi County Master Gardeners for over 25 years and was a past president, and was also active and served as president of the Kandiyohi County Horticultural Society.
Other organizations include Atwater American Legion Auxiliary (president); Atwater Lions Club (vice president); Atwater Area Historical Society; Atwater Living at Home Block Nurse program; save-the-Atwater Hotel committee; 14-year volunteer with Food for Kids; member for almost 50 years of Hope Presbyterian Church of Spicer where she served as deacon and worked hard to get a good mission program going; and co-chair of the first floral display at Kandiyohi County Fair.
In 2009, Holm received the Atwater Good Neighbor Award for outstanding service and dedication to the community of Atwater.
For a second year at Life Connections, a senior-friendly nonprofit organization of the year was named. West Central Dementia Awareness Network was honored Friday with the award sponsored by the Willmar Area Community Foundation.
The West Central Dementia Awareness Network is dedicated to providing education, resources and other support to people with dementia, their families and caregivers.
The network has been hosting two community workshops each year. The next workshop, on memory loss, is April 28 at Vinje Lutheran Church in Willmar.
