Marketing Concepts pulls out of Nelsen's Laundry purchase in Willmar

WILLMAR — A development deal that was to bring an estimated 60 employees to downtown Willmar seems to have been cancelled due to contamination at the site.

Marketing Concepts of Spicer had planned to purchase the former Nelsen's Laundry site on Benson Avenue Southwest in Willmar and redevelop it into new office space for the marketing business. However, after completing an environmental review of the site, issues were found that caused Marketing Concepts to pull out of the deal.

"All I know is that the potential buyer had said they were going to cancel the purchase agreement due to some contamination issues that were discovered during a phase 2 environmental review," said Willmar Planning and Development director Bruce Peterson.

The city of Willmar had begun the process to establish a redevelopment tax increment financing district on the site, which would have assisted the developer. A public hearing had been set for the district on May 1, but the future of that is uncertain.

Nelsen's Laundry operated out of the Benson Avenue building for all 101 years it was in operation. The family closed the business in October 2016. A call to Marketing Concepts was not returned Thursday.
