Sioux Falls man faces life in prison for kidnapping ex-girlfriend, putting her in trunk
SIOUX FALLS, S.D. -- A 61-year-old Sioux Falls man seeking revenge on his ex-girlfriend has admitted to a charge of kidnapping her and taking her into Minnesota in the trunk of her car.
Jon Henri Bryant Sr. appeared before U.S. District Judge Karen E. Schreier in federal court on Tuesday, Aug. 1, and pleaded guilty to the charge.
He faces up to life in prison.
According to the indictment, on Oct. 25, Bryant was waiting for the 37-year-old woman inside her garage on the east side of Sioux Falls where he grabbed her and forced her into the trunk of her vehicle and took off.
While Bryant was driving the car out of Sioux Falls and into Rock County in far southwest Minnesota, the woman got on her cell phone in the trunk and called 911 dispatchers about 8:25 a.m.
Bryant was driving on Minnesota Highway 23 as officers tracked the victim’s cellphone.
Teresa Kramer, a Rock County farmer, was on her way to the fields when she noticed a silver car speed along a nearby gravel road and pull into her neighbor’s driveway. She said the car provoked suspicion, as there is just an old barn at the location to which the suspect was driving.
Police arrested Bryant there and also found the woman, who had minor injuries after being strangled and punched.
A sentencing hearing has been set for Oct. 23.
