Woman walking on northeast SD highway hit by pickup, killed

WATERTOWN, S.D.  – A 29-year-old woman walking along U.S. Highway 212 about two miles west of Watertown was struck by a pickup and killed Thursday night about 9:40 p.m.

Names have not yet been released pending notification of family, said the South Dakota State Highway Patrol.

A 2012 Ford F-350 pickup driven by a 52-year-old man was eastbound in the passing lane of U.S. Highway 212 when he saw something on the shoulder of the road. He applied his brakes, but hit the woman who had entered the roadway. The pedestrian was later pronounced dead at the Watertown hospital.

Charges are not pending against the driver, said the Patrol.
