- Brandon Charles Sorgatz, 28, of Willmar, made his first appearance Wednesday on a felony charge of domestic assault by strangulation and a misdemeanor charge of domestic assault for a Monday incident.

Unconditional bail was set at $15,000. His next appearance is Feb. 11.

According to the complaint, Willmar Police and Kandiyohi County Sheriff’s officers were called around 9 p.m. Monday to Gay Street on a domestic assault. A woman reported that Sorgatz had assaulted her after they had been out drinking at a local establishment.

The woman, and other witnesses, reported that Sorgatz had choked the woman, threatened her and then took her to the ground and repeatedly punched her in the face. A neighbor intervened to free the woman from Sorgatz. The woman had injuries to her face and neck. Sorgatz also had injuries from the neighbor hitting him.

When interviewed, Sorgatz denied assaulting the woman, telling officers that the woman had hit him and that he’d put her on the ground to stop her from hitting him.
