Twin Cities men not hurt when vehicle goes through ice on Lake Koronis

PAYNESVILLE — Three men from the eastern Twin Cities were able to walk to shore after their vehicle broke through the ice early this morning on Lake Koronis near Paynesville.

According to the Stearns County Sheriff’s Office, Wong Thao, 27, of St. Paul, was driving a Chevrolet sport utility vehicle on the lake around 5:30 a.m. between the areas known as “First Island” and “Alexander Point” on the northeast side of the lake when the vehicle broke through the ice.

Thao and his passengers, David Thao, 29, of Oakdale, and Allen Thao, 24, of Maplewood, were not injured. The water in the area where the vehicle went through the ice is about 3 to 4 feet deep.

The Sheriff’s Office reminds citizens that the ice is never 100 percent safe and great care should be taken when driving a vehicle on ice, as ice conditions can change rapidly.
