A winter storm watch is in effect from this evening through Sunday morning for much of the west central Minnesota area, including Willmar and the counties of Kandiyohi, Lac qui Parle, Swift, Chippewa, Meeker, Yellow Medicine and Renville.

According to the National Weather Service, freezing rain, snow and sleet will develop tonight and continue through most of the day on Saturday.

Precipitation could change over to all snow or remain as a mixture of sleet and snow Saturday afternoon. Precipitation will change over to all snow by Saturday evening and end early Sunday morning.

The weather service said the main impact is the potential for ice accumulation of one-tenth to one-quarter inch, with snow accumulation between 2 and 4 inches throughout the duration of this event.

A winter storm watch means there is a potential for significant snow, sleet, or ice accumulations that may impact travel. Travel is expected to become hazardous starting tonight.
