Willmar School Board meetings go live Monday

WILLMAR -- Willmar School Board meetings will be cablecast live on Channel 18 beginning Monday.

The board meeting will begin at 4:30 p.m. Monday in the boardroom on the first floor of the Willmar Education and Arts Center and will be shown on cable channel 18 on cable systems in the Willmar area.

At Monday's meeting the board is slated to pass a resolution directing the administration to make recommendations for budget reductions, the formal beginning of a budget reduction process.

The board will also discuss the process for making budget cuts. Voters approved one part of the district's request for an operating levy, but turned down another. As a result, school officials estimate they will be cutting $1.6 million from the district's budget.

Board meetings have been recorded and shown later on local cable access channels for some time, but Monday will be the first time a meeting has been shown live from the boardroom at the WEAC. The meeting will be rerun at 9 p.m. on channel 19.

Rudy Vigil, coordinator for WRAC-8, Willmar's three local access channels, said the city upgraded the equipment in its City Council chambers. That allowed him to move the old, still usable equipment to the WEAC boardroom. The school district paid for the installation, and the city will own and maintain the equipment.

The new equipment allows the city to stream its council meetings live on the Internet, and it will allow the school district to go live.

"Some people can't get there," Vigil said, "and now they can watch them live."

The school district and others use WEAC to run live programming from the rehearsal hall or auditorium in the building, Vigil said.
