School board to make final decisions on budget cuts

WILLMAR -- The Willmar School Board will meet at 4:30 p.m. Monday to make final decisions on nearly $2 million in budget cuts for the 2010-11 school year.

The meeting will be at the Willmar Municipal Utilities building in the Willmar City Council chambers.

The meeting will also be shown live on local cable channel 18.

The board has been working on the budget cuts since late January, and the proposed list of cuts has changed several times during discussions.

The list as it stood after the last meeting included many job cuts. Some employees will have their jobs eliminated, while others will see their hours reduced.

Teaching positions that could be lost include four elementary classroom teachers, one English Language Learner teacher, 1.5 music teaching positions and two special education teachers. Teaching hours could be reduced in middle school electives and communications/reading and in senior high Spanish, business, math, and family and consumer sciences.

The board is set to take action on a resolution terminating all the non-tenured teachers in the district, although some of them could return next year, depending on the district's needs. A resolution to begin the process of placing four tenured teachers on unrequested leave of absence is also on the agenda.

Other items on the agenda include approving the 2010-11 calendar, changing the start and end times for the elementary schools in the district and approving the West Central Integration Collaborative budget.

The board will also discuss working with the city of Willmar to construction a separate bus entrance and turnaround at Roosevelt Elementary.
