Filings for local elections will close today across Minnesota

WILLMAR -- Filing will close today for local elections across the state, in preparation for the Nov. 2 general election.

For the Willmar School Board, Shawn Mueske of Willmar and Jill J.H. Gould of Willmar are the most recent to file. A total of five candidates have filed so far for three openings on the board.

Other candidates are Bill Fenske of Willmar, Linda Mathiasen of Willmar and Don Thorpe of rural Willmar. Incumbents Brad Schmidt, Mike Carlson and Dion Warne said earlier that they would not seek re-election. Most area school districts and smaller cities have offices up for election this fall. Some townships also have elections.

These filings are for offices that do not hold primaries. Counties and larger cities, along with state and federal offices, had a filing period in May.

Where necessary, those candidate fields were narrowed in the Aug. 10 primary.

For specific information about filing, candidates should call their municipal clerk or school business office. After filing closes, candidates have two days to decide if they wish to withdraw their candidacies.

Filing fees are $2 for school and township offices and $2 or $5 in cities, depending on the size of the city.

More information about elections and filing for office, including information about people who have already filed, is available at the Minnesota secretary of state's website: www.sos.
