Willmar, Minn., School Board to meet Monday afternoon

WILLMAR -- The Willmar School Board will meet at 4:30 p.m. Monday in the board room on the first floor of the Willmar Education and Arts Center, 611 Fifth Street S.W.

The board is scheduled to consider approving the 2011-13 contracts for the district's teachers and for teachers and for secretarial employees.

Also on the agenda is the 2011-12 revised budget. School districts are required by the state to adopt budgets before the fiscal year begins on June 30 each year. However, much of the budget is based on estimates, and districts thus revise their budgets once they know more about how much state and federal funding they will receive.

The general fund budget revision indicates the local revenue and state revenue will be a total of about $600,000 more than anticipated, and expenses are expected to increase about the same amount. Expenses increased because of employee benefits; purchased services, including iPad leases; and supplies, including higher gas prices.

The board will also review changes to student handbooks for next year and hear a report on a K-3 Literacy Plan from Curriculum Director Cheryl Nash.

The board will listen to public comments related to items on the agenda at the beginning of the meeting. Those who want to comment on issues that are not on Monday's agenda may do so at the end of the meeting.

Board meetings are shown live on Willmar local cable access channel 18 and are shown later on channel 19.
