School board could finish year with 5 members

WILLMAR -- Willmar School Board member Wayne Lenzmeier announced Monday that he will resign from the board at the end of August.

That would leave Willmar Public Schools with five board members instead of the usual seven.

Lenzmeier made his announcement after the School Board meeting on Monday. He said he and his wife have sold their home and are scheduled to close on the sale on Aug. 31.

Eric Roberts resigned from the board in June after he sold his home and moved outside the district. Lenzmeier said he would be moving outside the district, too.

After Ro-berts' resignation, board members de-cided not to appoint a re-placement, as his term would have expired at the end of the year anyway.

With Lenzmeier leaving, board chairman Nathan Streed said Thursday that he anticipates the same decision again. Lenzmeier's term expires at the end of the year as well. Both of them were first elected to the board in 2003.

The board has just four formal meetings and a few work sessions left before the end of the year. "I would struggle with trying to appoint someone to that," Streed said.

If the positions would be open longer, he may see the situation differently, Streed said.

"It's sad to see Lenny go, because he has contributed for a number of years," he said, "but good for them to be able to sell their house."

Monday evening, Lenzmeier said serving on the board had been a great experience. "It's a great way to give back what you got when you were younger," he said.

Six candidates have filed for the four School Board seats up for election this fall in Willmar. One incumbent, Mike Reynolds, filed for re-election. The other incumbent, Sandi Unger, did not file.

The other candidates are Jackie Saulsbury, Sahra Gure, Liz VanDerBill and Mike Carlson, all of Willmar; and Don Thorpe of Kandiyohi.
