Highway 71 project near Willmar, Minn. delayed

WILLMAR – The start of a construction project on U.S. Highway 71 near Willmar has been delayed until later this week.

Work was scheduled to begin today.

Instead, work is tentatively scheduled to begin on Thursday.

According to the Minnesota Department of Transportation District 8 office in Willmar, the change was caused by contractor delays.

The project includes a stretch of Highway 71 from Highway 7 to Highway 23 south of Willmar.

Crews will begin work on the bridges over the Willmar Bypass and then begin resurfacing Highway 71 approximately mid-August.

The project consists of a bituminous mill and overlay, turn lane construction and bridge approach panel repair.

Meanwhile, crews will begin construction on Highway 71 north of Willmar from Kandiyohi County Road 24 to the Highway 71 and Highway 23 split north of Willmar beginning Aug. 5. That project consists of a bituminous overlay and turn lane construction.

Duininck Inc. from Prinsburg is the prime contractor for the nearly $3.4 project.  Completion is scheduled for the end of October, weather permitting.
