Marshall man found dead in squad car, case under investigation

MARSHALL — The death of a 53-year-old Marshall man is under investigation by the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension after his body was discovered Saturday in a parked Lyon County Sheriff’s office squad car at the county’s law enforcement center.

According to the BCA, toxicology test results for Raul Bautista-Avalos are pending.

According to the preliminary investigation by the BCA and the Marshall Police Department, Bautista-Avalos came to the city’s police department at 611 West Main Street around 2:30 a.m. Saturday appearing highly intoxicated and requesting a ride home. He was told to wait in the lobby area where an officer would come to speak with him. When the officer arrived a few minutes later Bautista-Avalos had left the police department.

Around 4:45 p.m. Saturday, a sheriff’s deputy arriving for an afternoon shift entered his vehicle and found Bautista-Avalos deceased in the front seat. The investigation suggests Bautista-Avalos left the police department and entered the squad, which was parked at the back of the parking lot, through an unlocked back door. When Bautista-Avalos was unable to re-open the back door, it appears he climbed through a 1-by-1 foot window in the Plexiglas barrier to the front seat. Investigators do not suspect foul play in his death.
