Vehicle engulfed in flames near Litchfield

LITCHFIELD — A vehicle fire was reported to the Meeker County Sheriff’s Office at 2:30 p.m. Thursday near the intersection of state Highway 22 and Meeker County Road 28.

The vehicle, a 2001 Dodge Caravan, was engulfed in flames when emergency personnel arrived at the scene, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.

The driver, Wanda Bartelt-Heidecker, 46, of Brownton, said she noticed the smell of smoke coming from the vents of the vehicle. She pulled over and got out of her vehicle and, within a minute or two, the van caught fire near the engine compartment.

It is believed the fire started due to an electrical issue with the vehicle, according to the release. There were no injuries as a result of the fire.

A small section of grass in the Highway 22 ditch also caught fire. The Litchfield Fire Department extinguished both fires.

The State Patrol also responded to the incident.
