Meeker Co. joins effort to cut speeding
LITCHFIELD — Meeker County Sheriff Jeff Norlin announces that the Meeker County Sheriff’s Office will participate with agencies throughout Minnesota in an enhanced enforcement and education effort of the dangers of speeding.
The sheriff’s office will conduct increased speed patrols Nov. 4-8 to combat this deadly cause of traffic crashes. Law enforcement will be emphasizing the need to drive at safe speeds through the increased patrols.
Norlin says unsafe and illegal speed is the most commonly reported contributing factor in fatal crashes. During 2009-11, speed was a contributing factor in four fatalities in Meeker County and a contributing factor in 254 traffic deaths statewide.
Traveling at unsafe speeds increases the chances of crashing violently, he said. Driving at unsafe speeds causes a greater potential for loss of vehicle control, increased stopping distance and less time available for drivers to respond for crash avoidance.
HUTCHINSON — The Meeker County Sheriff’s Office, Hutchinson Fire Department and Hutchinson Rescue responded to a report at 11:17 a.m. Saturday of a combine and corn field on fire west of 10853 610th Ave. in Hutchinson.
The field and combine are owned by Gary Hoff of Hutchinson. The combine is a 2010 Challenger 670 and had an estimated $500 in damage along with approximately 200 bushels of corn lost during the fire.
The cause of the fire from the combine is undetermined.
