Willmar man honored by Kiwanis

WILLMAR — Jim Buisman of Willmar has received the 2013 Kiwanis Touch A Life Award.

According to the announcement from the Willmar Noon Kiwanis Club, Buisman is committed to service to his community, his family, his church and his country. And he has not allowed either health problems or personal losses to deter him from meeting what he calls his “obligations.” Early in life he was encouraged by his parents to serve. The message has stuck with him.

Soon after he was discharged from the U.S. Navy, he joined the American Legion. His Legion activities are legendary, the award announcement states.

He has raised money to provide scholarships to nursing students who are in their final year of school.

He has helped with the annual pheasant dinner for veterans and the distribution of Christmas gifts to veterans in our nursing homes.

He has placed flags on the graves of veterans as well as served as a member of the funeral honor guards and he has worked at the Legion bingo games.

He is currently the financial officer and former commander of the Willmar’s 800-member post.

He has also been involved in the Willmar Sportsman’s Club.

He and his wife, Wilma, have assumed responsibility for providing both service and leadership to the Willmar Area Food Shelf where he was treasurer for six years. While treasurer of the Food Shelf, he was able to procure a loan to purchase the current building after he convinced the Board than an additional $75 a month increase in the monthly loan payment would save more than $15,000 over the loan period. They have been recognized as Minnesota Food Shelf volunteers of the year.

He has volunteered hundreds of hours of service in the church kitchen, where he is a dishwasher.
