Local guide to holiday shopping on its way: Tribune’s Wednesday edition is super-sized

WILLMAR — Your instruction manual for Christmas shopping is on its way, and it’s sure to make a bigger splash than the Shenzhou capsule that brought Sandra Bullock safely to earth in the blockbuster movie “Gravity.’’

It’s also a lot more fun to read than the Chinese language manual Bullock found in the capsule that saved her life.

Wednesday’s edition of the West Central Tribune will be packed with colorful advertisements, inserts and coupons for shoppers, all in time for Black Friday.

Weighing in at just over 2 pounds, this year’s super-sized edition is bigger than last year’s, according to Rick Buddy.

He would know. As mailroom director for the West Central Tribune, Buddy said his crew began working nearly two weeks ago on assembling the 21 different inserts that are part of this year’s package.

Because the package is so large, all the work has to be done by hand, according to Buddy. It’s too big for the machinery that is otherwise used.

“We talk about this as our Super Bowl edition of the paper,’’ said Kevin Smith, advertising director of the West Central Tribune. “It is like running an ad during the biggest television program of the year.’’

The newspaper’s circulation increases on Wednesday by 25 percent, providing advertisers with a readership of more than 46,000 people, according to Smith.

The biggest numbers belong to the shoppers. As always, the inserts and coupons offer shoppers big savings on holiday gifts. Shoppers can save a lot of money by taking advantage of the specials.

No need to risk your life like the astronaut Bullock played in the movie “Gravity” to find this manual.

Subscribers will find it delivered to their doors or mailboxes.

The West Central Tribune’s special Thanksgiving edition will also be available for over-the-counter sales at all of the newspaper dealers in the region and Willmar that carry the Tribune for $3. It will not be available in racks.

Counter sales in Willmar include: Casey’s, Cub Foods, Eagle Lake Country Store, Handi-Stop, Holiday, Sunray Coffee Pot Cafe, Sunray Express, Super America, Thrifty White, Trav’s Dino Mart, Walt’s, Walgreen’s, and Willmar Auto Plaza.
