Willmar man facing felony charges for assault on boy with bike chain

WILLMAR — Christopher Peter Padin, 36, of Willmar, made his first court appearance Thursday on two felony charges of second-degree assault and domestic assault by strangulation for allegedly assaulting a teenager with a bike chain.

Unconditional bail was set at $50,000. His next appearance is Jan. 2 in Kandiyohi County District Court.

According to the complaint, Willmar police officers were called around 7:15 a.m. Wednesday to a residence on the southeast side of the city on a domestic disturbance. A 16-year-old boy reported that Padin and another person had an argument and that the boy had also gotten involved in the argument. The boy said that Padin pushed and hit him and then took a bicycle chain the boy happened to have with him and wrapped it around his neck and pulled it tight so that the boy could not breathe.

The boy had grease and red marks consistent with the shape of bike chain links on his neck.

Two others at the residence had witnessed the altercation and verified the boy’s report to police.

Officers located Padin in the residence and interviewed him. He denied doing anything with the boy and later said he took the chain away when the boy and another juvenile were arguing.
