Law enforcement and other first responders donate blood Monday in the second annual Battle of the Badges, held in conjunction with a community blood drive at the Assembly of God Church in Willmar. The Willmar Police Department challenged the Willmar Fire Department, Willmar Ambulance, Kandiyohi County Sheriff's Office and Kandiyohi Rescue Aquad to donate their blood to win the Battle of the Badges trophy.

Downtown design standards implemented last year by the city of Willmar have been relaxed slightly, prompted by the proposed Kwik Trip gas station and convenience store. The zoning ordinance was amended to make changes to a standard regarding windows and another standard regarding building height and decorative cornices.

Willmar Fests, which already sponsored several floats in the Holidaze parade, has now taken over the entire event that kicks off the holiday season each winter in Willmar. The City Council approved giving Willmar Fests the $5,000 for Holidaze, which was initially appropriated to Willmar Downtown Development until the group said it could no longer organize the event.

The city of Willmar will replace around 76 of these ballistic blocks in the indoor gun range at the Willmar City Auditorium. Decontamination cleaning will also be taking place, to keep the lead levels within mandated standards.
