Bremer Foundation donates $100K to YMCA

WILLMAR — The Kandiyohi County Area Family YMCA has received a $100,000 capital donation from the Otto Bremer Foundation.

The donation brings the Y’s capital campaign within $10,000 of its fundraising goal of $2.4 million. The money will be used for an expansion project that will double the wellness center space and create a larger wellness studio. It will also add a multi-purpose gymnasium and two racquetball courts.

“This gift provides cash in the bank to move forward to expand a facility designed for 3,000 people and now serving nearly 5,800,” Theresa Wittenberg, the Y’s executive director, said in a news release.

“It’s really exciting times for the Y,” said YMCA Board Chairman Marv Calvin Wednesday afternoon.

There’s less than $10,000 to raise to reach the goal. “At that point, construction costs for the expansion are paid for,” Calvin said.

The big donations have helped make big leaps to the goal, but all gifts to the cause have been appreciated.

“At the end of the day, the person who gives $1 or $5 is just as important,” Calvin said.

The expansion should be done in mid-2014, he said.

“It’s a very aggressive project,” Calvin said. Workers for Marcus Construction are working on installing tilt-up panels for the walls, and “once we get inside, things should go pretty quickly.”

The Y has used local contractors for its original construction and the new expansion, he added.

Calvin said Bremer has been a “true partner” in supporting community projects like the YMCA expansion.
