YMCA in Willmar to host family-friendly New Year’s event again this year

WILLMAR — This year, families can once again ring in the new year at the Kandiyohi County Area Family YMCA’s annual New Year’s Eve celebration.

Now in its fifth year, the event will be from 4:30 to 8:15 p.m. Tuesday at the YMCA, 1000 Lakeland Drive S.E. The evening will include inflatables, swimming, carnival games, prizes, face painting and two magic shows at 6 and 7 p.m. There will also be turkey brats, soda and water available.

“It’s a fun way for families to enjoy New Year’s,” said Ryan Scheffler, program director at the Y. “A family can come and enjoy four hours of spending time together.”

Cost for the event is $2 per person, with a maximum of $6 per family. You can also bring a canned food item for the Willmar Area Food Shelf in place of admission.

“We want to keep it at a minimum cost for families,” Scheffler said. “We’re fortunate to have a lot of sponsorships that cover some of the major costs. Without the community support, we wouldn’t be able to do this.”

Last year, 1,000 people came to the Y’s New Year’s Eve celebration. Scheffler expects a similar attendance again this year.

“We invite everyone from the community to come out and have fun,” he said. “Parents can sit back and enjoy themselves and watch their kids have a blast.”
