Man arrested for endangering baby

WILLMAR — Willmar police officers arrested a man Tuesday when it appeared he was either going to jump out a second-story window with a 6-month-old baby, or drop the baby out the window.

The 25-year-old man was arrested on charges of domestic assault, terroristic threats, child endangerment and obstructing the legal process. He is being held in the Kandiyohi County Jail awaiting a court appearance.

According to the initial report, police were called to the 200 block of Augusta Avenue Southeast at 2:48 p.m. after a woman called for help to gain custody of her child.

Officers outside the home saw that the man had knocked out a window screen from a second-floor room and was reportedly attempting to drop the child or jump out the window himself. At that point officers entered the bedroom and prevented an incident from happening.

House fire

WILLMAR — A home at 1051 Hill Road Southwest suffered minor damage in a fire reported Wednesday afternoon.

According to police, no one was home at the time of the fire, which was reported at 12:36 p.m. by an individual who saw smoke coming from the house.

The fire was reportedly caused by towels that were too close to an electrical heater in the bathroom.

Stolen truck

SPICER — A pickup stolen Wednesday in Spicer was also involved in a hit-and-run crash.

The crash was reported first at 2:27 a.m. in the parking lot at Zorbaz.

According to police, the vehicle was abandoned and the driver fled on foot.

About a half-hour later a woman reported that a grey and silver 2006 Ford Explorer pickup had been stolen from the 100 block of Kandiyohi Avenue Southwest.


WILLMAR — Three people were arrested in a neighborhood disturbance that was reported at 2:08 a.m. Wednesday in the 500 block of Lakeland Drive Southeast. A 24-year old woman was arrested on a charge of fourth-degree assault and a 21-year-old man was arrested on charges of fourth-degree assault of a peace officer, criminal damage to property, disorderly conduct and obstructing the legal process.

Another individual was cited for underage consumption.

WILLMAR —  A 36-year-old man was arrested at 10:20 p.m. in the 2000 block of 66th Avenue Northeast on a charge of domestic assault and obstructing the legal process of a peace officer.

SPICER —  A 23-year-old woman was arrested on a charge of fifth-degree assault after police responded to a report of a domestic disturbance at 3:07 a.m. Wednesday in the 100 block of Third Avenue.

WILLMAR — Police responded to a report at 11:28 p.m. Tuesday of individuals assaulting each other at a residence in the 500 block of Fourth Street Southeast.


NEW LONDON —  A New London man reported that someone had used his bank account information to create fake checks that were written and cashed from his account. The incident was reported Tuesday morning.


WILLMAR —  An iPhone was reported stolen at 10:53 a.m. Wednesday from the 500 block of Lakeland Drive Southeast. The locator on the phone tracked the device to the pocket of a man who was at a different location. The man denied any knowledge of having the phone, according to the police report. The phone was returned to the owner.


FAIRFAX — The Renville County Sheriff’s Department responded to a two-vehicle accident at 9:50 a.m. Wednesday at County Road 16 and 640th Avenue, about three miles west of Fairfax.

According to the initial crash investigation, a 2011 GMC Sierra driven by Jeffrey Zarn of

Sleepy Eye was going west on 640th Avenue and failed to yield the right of way to a 2012 Chevrolet Silverado, driven by Gregory Frison, of Becker, that was going south on County Road 16.

Zarn and Frison were transported to medical facilities in Sleepy Eye and Redwood Falls and treated for moderate injuries, according to Renville County Sheriff Scott Hable.

Assisting at the scene were the Renville County Sheriff’s Office, Fairfax Fire Department, Fairfax Rescue and Fairfax Ambulance.

TRACY — Benjamin Alberg, 17, of Milroy, was injured Wednesday when the 2000 Ford Super Duty vehicle he was driving ran off the road.

According to the Minnesota State Patrol, the accident was reported shortly before 7 a.m. about 1½ miles east of Tracy in Redwood County. Alberg was going north on Aspen Avenue, a gravel road, when his vehicle went off the road near state Highway 14.

He was taken to the hospital in Tracy and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

GRANITE FALLS — Two people were injured Monday in a broadside crash at about 2:30 p.m. Monday at the intersection of State Highway 274 and County Road 44 south of Granite Falls.

A vehicle driven by Cody W. Leske, 25, of Granite Falls, was traveling southbound on Highway 274 and a vehicle drive by Constance L. Skeie, 50, of Granite Falls, was traveling northbound on Highway 274. They collided in a broadside collision.

Both were transported to Granite Falls Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, according to a report from the Minnesota State Patrol.

MONTEVIDEO — An Appleton man was injured Monday in a single-vehicle rollover crash at about 9:30 p.m. Monday at the intersection of state Highway 7 and U.S. Highway 59 in Chippewa County.

According to a report from the Minnesota State Patrol, Jerome V. Michaels, 18, of Appleton, was injured when his vehicle left Highway 59 and rolled. Michaels was transported to the Montevideo hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.

WILLMAR — Local law enforcement officers had a busy New Year’s Eve issuing numerous traffic citations, arresting drunk drivers and responding to minor accidents and reports of vehicles that were in the ditch or abandoned on streets and roads.

One accident was a one-vehicle rollover reported at 1:46 a.m. Wednesday on County Road 4 Southeast and 45th Avenue Southeast near Atwater. An individual reported seeing a vehicle on its roof in the ditch with footprints in the snow leading to the road. No one was in the vehicle.

Police responded to other non-injury accidents, including one that was reported at 1:07 p.m. Tuesday in the 4000 block of Highway 12 West and another that was reported at 7:49 p.m. Tuesday on Kandiyohi County Road 5 Southwest and 90 Avenue Southwest in Willmar.
