Willmar man pleads to felony charge for bike chain assault on teen

WILLMAR — Christopher Peter Padin, 36, of Willmar, pleaded guilty Thursday to a felony charge of domestic assault by strangulation for assaulting a teenager with a bike chain

As part of a plea agreement in Kandiyohi County District Court, another felony for second-degree assault will be dismissed. He will be sentenced Feb. 24.

The charges were filed after Dec. 4, when Willmar police officers were called around 7:15 a.m. to a residence on the southeast side of the city on a domestic disturbance. A 16-year-old boy reported that Padin and another person had an argument and that the boy had also gotten involved in the argument. The boy said that Padin pushed and hit him and then took a bicycle chain the boy happened to have with him and wrapped it around his neck and pulled it tight so that the boy could not breathe.

The boy had grease and red marks consistent with the shape of bike chain links on his neck.

Two others at the residence had witnessed the altercation and verified the boy’s report to police.
