Willmar School Board to receive facility recommendation Monday
WILLMAR — The Willmar School Board will receive a recommendation Monday from the facilities task force it appointed last year.
The board meets at 4:30 p.m. Monday in the board room on the first floor of the Willmar Education and Arts Center, 611 Fifth St. S.W.
The task force will make a central recommendation of building a new middle school and remodeling elementary schools to accommodate a growing enrollment, aging facilities and crowded schools.
A minority report will recommend building a new building for early childhood programs through grade 2, plus remodeling other buildings.
Both plans include doing some maintenance work that has been deferred because of cost. They also include plans for a field house athletic facility connected to the high school.
Superintendent Jerry Kjergaard will recommend to the board that the district use Jan. 20 as a makeup day for school being canceled this week because of ice and cold. Jan. 20 was originally scheduled as a staff in-service day.
Under Kjergaard’s recommendation, only students at the Middle School and High School would have classes on that day. Elementary students will not have school and the staff development training in math will go on as scheduled.
Also on the agenda is approval of labor agreements with three employee bargaining units: custodians; food service employees; and special education paraprofessionals, sign language interpreters and job coaches.
The board listens to public comments related to items on the agenda at the beginning of the meeting. Comments not related to the agenda are heard at the end of the meeting.
Board meetings are shown live on Willmar local cable access channel 18 and are recorded for later showing on channel 19.
