County office filings: Candidates have until Tuesday to file for 2014 election

WILLMAR –– An early look at who’s filed to run for office indicates there may not be many races for county positions.

Filings end on Tuesday, but so far lone candidates –– oftentimes the incumbents –– have filed to run for office in most counties in the region.

The exception is Meeker County where there are already three competitive races: county auditor, recorder and sheriff. The interest there is likely because of the retirements of Sheriff Jeff Norlin and Recorder Elaine Lenhard.

Meeker County Auditor Barb Loch, who has filed for re-election, has one challenger so far for that job.

Two incumbents in Swift County will also have competition.

Swift County Attorney Robin Finke and County Sheriff John Holtz have filed for re-election and both have a challenger, according to the latest posting on the Minnesota Secretary of State’s website.

Another competitive race is happening in Chippewa County where Recorder Diane Ketelsen said she doesn’t intend to file for office this year. Two employees in the recorder’s office will run against each other for that top job.

In Kandiyohi County there are two less offices that voters will select this fall.

The Kandiyohi County Board took action earlier this year to make the recorder and auditor/treasurer’s offices appointed, rather than elected. The Commissioners said they made the move to streamline public service and ensure that qualified individuals are in the top jobs.

Besides electing the county board members, Kandiyohi County voters will elect only the sheriff and attorney.

Two other area counties, Lac qui Parle and Yellow Medicine, have also transitioned to appointing department heads and have just the sheriff and county attorney on the election docket.

Meanwhile, Meeker County is one of the few in the area that still elects individuals to five separate offices: auditor, treasurer, recorder, sheriff and attorney.

The following is the latest office filings provided by the Secretary of State’s office.
