Ozornia pleads guilty to two domestic abuse felonies

WILLMAR — Erik Ozornia, 25, pleaded guilty Wednesday to two felony charges connected to domestic abuse incidents in January and March.

Ozornia is currently in custody at the Minnesota Correctional Facility at St. Cloud.

He pleaded guilty to a felony charge of terroristic threats in connection with a January domestic abuse incident in Willmar. He had been charged with felony counts of domestic assault and terroristic threats for allegedly assaulting a woman and then dangling a 6-month-old baby out a second-story window when authorities attempted to question him.

Court records indicated that he had threatened to drop the baby if the officers didn’t stay back. One of the officers stepped in to prevent the child from being dropped and Ozornia was subdued and placed under arrest.

He also pleaded guilty to a felony charge of violating a domestic abuse no-contact order in March. The no-contact order had been issued after the January incident. Ozornia was accused of using another woman as a go-between to establish phone contact with the woman he had been ordered to avoid.

In return for his guilty pleas, several lower level charges were dismissed, including a gross misdemeanor charge of child endangerment from the January incident. Other misdemeanor charges to be dismissed included criminal damage to property and tampering with a fire alarm in late January. The same two charges were filed against him in connection with an incident in February. The sentences on the two felony counts are to be served concurrently, according to court records.

Judge Donald Spilseth ordered a pre-sentence investigation. A sentencing date has not been set.

He has two prior convictions for assault, including a gross misdemeanor domestic assault conviction in December 2012 and a juvenile adjudication for third-degree assault in 2004. He also has two previous convictions for violating domestic abuse no-contact orders, in December 2010 and August 2004.
