Kandiyohi County Board decision on appointing or electing officers delayed until Feb. 17

WILLMAR -- Discussion on whether two county officials should be appointed by county commissioners, or continue to be elected by the public, took place today at the Kandiyohi County Board meeting.

A decision was delayed until Feb.17.

The commissioners are considering whether the auditor/treasurer and recorder posts should be appointed. Currently county voters elect them.

The change could be made by seeking special legislation or by putting the question to local voters in the next election.

Recorder Julie Kalkbrenner told the commissioners that if the method of selecting the office is changed, she hopes it would be put to the voters.

The change is being considered because the knowledge and expertise that's needed for the jobs has increased over the years. There are no minimum requirements, however, to be elected to the positions.

The commissioners had high praise for Kalkbrenner and Modderman but at least three of the five commissioners expressed interested in exploring the option of appointing the posts.

Commissioner Harlan Madsen said he was eager to hear comments from the public before voting in two weeks.
