Repeated calls to authorities Saturday about grass fires in Kandiyohi County

PENNOCK -- After a trace of rain fell early Saturday morning, a burning ban in Kandiyohi County was lifted.

There was no news release issued, however, which resulted in the Sheriff's Department receiving a number of phone calls Saturday about a grass fire near Pennock and one by Raymond.

The Tribune was informed Sunday that Sheriff Dan Hartog called the dispatch center on Saturday to inform them the burning ban was being lifted.

With recent dry conditions and repeated warnings in the last couple weeks from state and local authorities that burning was restricted, the department received calls Saturday afternoon and evening from individuals concerned about a grass fire by St. John's Lake near Pennock.

A call was received after midnight about a grass fire near Raymond.

In both cases, the fires were controlled burns and permits had been acquired.

With the ban lifted, there was no violation.

The good dousing of rain Sunday has likely eliminated any threat of an uncontrolled grass fire.
