KAT plans to celebrate its 10th anniversary this week

WILLMAR -- The Kandiyohi Area Transit system will be celebrating its 10th anniversary Thursday afternoon at the Becker Street Market.

Representatives from KAT will be at their new bus stop, the Becker Street Station, from 3-5 p.m. Thursday to promote KAT, answer questions and serve refreshments. KAT has had numerous accomplishments during its 10 years, said Transit Director Tiffany Collins.

It was named the state's transit system of the year in 2005 and in 2008 KAT had its 1 millionth rider.

"Being able to build our own facility and have our staff and operations all under one roof is definitely a highlight as well," said Collins.

There have been challenges as well.

Having enough buses to accommodate the needs was an early challenge, followed by keeping the cost of maintenance under control.

Collins said KAT is concerned with "trying to keep our budgets in line and keep costs low for passengers who need transportation."

The focus of the governing board has always been to "keep the fares low so people are able to ride it."

KAT is noting its 10th year by expanding services to include a fixed route on the west side of town that serves the industrial park employees. She said the new Becker Street Station bus stop is also being used increasingly as a drop-off and pick-up site for buses and riders throughout the day.
