United Way nears $1 million goal

WILLMAR — Fundraising campaigns for the United Way of West Central Minnesota have raised $902,955, bringing the nonprofit organization within arm’s reach of its $1 million goal. This year marks the second time since 1955 that United Way has raised more than $900,000 in a year.

“I think that people are really seeing the groundwork we are doing out there,” said United Way spokesperson James Miller. “The GrowMobile, the Imagination Library and the impact that we’ve been able to have on our community has really shown people that United Way is a cause worth donating to.”

Larger donations from local businesses, a large turnout at the annual golf tournament and a grant for the new GrowMobile have helped push United Way beyond the $900,000 mark.

The final fundraiser begins Monday and runs until the end of June.

Miller believes there is potential for United Way to reach its goal if the campaign takes off. “The idea is simple: you give $5 and you spread the word to five friends,” Miller said. “With the number of people in our area, $5 from each person has the ability make a huge impact on the communities we serve and help us reach our final goal by June 30.”

Donations to the United Way will support 48 programs across west central Minnesota.
