Teen faces charges for alleged sexual assault of a toddler

WILLMAR -- A 19-year-old Willmar man made his first appearance Monday on criminal sexual conduct charges for allegedly sexually assaulting a girl while she was between the ages of 1 and 3 years old.

Martin William Danielson faces two first-degree charges as a juvenile in Kandiyohi County District Court.

He was ordered held at the secure unit of Prairie Lakes Youth Programs.

His next appearance is a probable cause hearing for adult certification on Dec. 24.

The charges were filed against Danielson on Dec. 7 and the county attorney's office filed a motion Dec. 9 for adult certification based on Danielson's age now, the young age of the alleged victim and the seriousness of the crime.

According to the complaint, Willmar police began investigating when a child protection report stated that the girl, now 7, had told her mother that she had been abused by Danielson. After local police interviewed others connected to the case, law enforcement officers in California, where the girl lives now, interviewed her.

The girl said that Danielson had abused her while she was at a Willmar home where he lived and that he told her to come into his room, where he sexually assaulted her. The girl could not recall how many times she was assaulted.

Danielson was interviewed and denied sexually abusing the girl. He did tell officers he was living with a relative in Willmar during the alleged time frame.
