$150,000 bail set for stabbing defendant

WILLMAR — Judge David L. Mennis set cash bail or bail bond at $150,000 today for Exsavor Rene Cruz, 19, in connection with the June 26 stabbing of Cruz’s step-grandmother Maria H. Garcia, 64, of Willmar.

Cruz was arraigned this morning in Kandiyohi County District Court on two felony charges of first-degree assault-great bodily harm, and second-degree assault. Garcia suffered four stab wounds to the neck and shoulder and was hit in the head with a frying pan. He did not enter a plea at this time.

Garcia was reported in “fair’’ condition Sunday by a spokesperson at North Memorial Health Center in Robbinsdale.

According to the criminal complaint, Garcia had been sleeping, went downstairs, found Cruz and asked him why he was there. The complaint says Cruz asked to use Garcia’s phone. The complaint also states that Cruz was doing laundry.

Garcia stated she informed Cruz that he needed to ask permission first. Garcia went back upstairs and while lying down Cruz began stabbing her.

Cruz was taken into custody June 27 at a residence on Gorton Avenue.
