Sex charge against Rochester man dropped

Update: The sex charges against KC Shannon Johns of Rochester, Minn., listed in West Central Tribune stories published Aug. 28, 2009, and Sept. 3, 2009, were dismissed. The dismissal was filed March 3, 2010, by the Kandiyohi County Attorney's office and a West Central Tribune story on the dismissal was published on March 19, 2010.

WILLMAR -- A criminal sexual conduct charge against a Rochester man for allegedly sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl last summer at Sonshine Music Festival has been dismissed.

According to the dismissal filed March 3 by the Kandiyohi County Attorney's office, DNA analysis conducted by the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension lab excludes KC Shannon Jones, 24, of Rochester, and an unnamed individual in the alleged assault.

Shannon faced a third-degree felony charge in Kandiyohi County District Court.

The charge was filed after the mother of a 14-year-old Claremont girl notified Willmar police on July 19 that her daughter said she'd been raped on July 13 or 14 at the Christian music event in Willmar. The girl identified Jones by his driver's license photo. Jones told officers he'd shared a blanket with the girl, but denied sexual contact with her.

He also submitted a DNA sample, which was tested against samples taken from the girl's clothing.
