Man found bleeding from gunshots south of Granite Falls

GRANITE FALLS — A man was listed in critical condition Friday at Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis after being found bleeding from apparent gunshot wounds early Friday morning south of Granite Falls.

According to a news release from the Yellow Medicine County Sheriff’s Office, a caller reported at 12:41 a.m. Friday that a man was lying on Highway 23 covered in blood at the intersection with 260th Avenue south of Granite Falls. The release did not include information about the man’s age or city of residence.

Deputies found that the man appeared to be bleeding from gunshot wounds. He was transported to Granite Falls Hospital and then flown to HCMC.

The case is under investigation.

Woman injured in crash near Clara City

CLARA CITY –– One person was injured Thursday afternoon in a side-swipe type accident on state Highway 23 near Clara City, but the other seven people involved escaped without any apparent injuries.

According to the State Patrol, Staci Manthei, 36, of Marshall, was injured when the vehicle she was driving south on Highway 23 crossed the center line and collided with a trailer that was being pulled by a northbound vehicle driven by Harvey Sik, 53, of Canby.

Passengers in Mathei’s vehicle, Jason Manthei, 35, Jayden Manthei, 8 and Carter Manthei, 6, all of Marshall, were not injured.

Sik and passengers in his vehicle, Jayne Sik, 52, of Canby, Sarah Schmiesing, 25, and Aubrey Schmiesing, one, (no address given) were not injured.

The Chippewa County Sheriff’s office, Clara City Police department and the Granite Falls Ambulance assisted the State Patrol at the scene.


WILLMAR –– Willmar Police fielded a report of a telephone scam with the caller seeking credit card information. The twist is that the scammers are apparently using phone numbers of at least one Willmar business, which shows up on the victim’s caller ID. The calls are not originating from the Willmar business, but the scammers are able to make local numbers show up on the caller ID, according to a preliminary police report.


WILLMAR –– A Willmar business reported that a counterfeit $100 bill was cashed at their store Friday morning. A suspect was identified.


WILLMAR –– The theft of two iPhones was reported at the Sonshine music festival Friday.


Willmar –– The outside teller tube at Bremer Bank, located on Willmar Avenue Southeast, was damaged Friday morning when a customer reportedly became angry when the bank wouldn’t cash their check. According to the police report, the customer broke the teller tube and then ran over it with their vehicle.
