School plans informational meeting for prospective substitute teachers

WILLMAR — An information meeting for people interested in substitute positions with the Willmar Public Schools is planned for noon Tuesday at The Oaks at Eagle Creek.

The district has had a shortage of substitute teachers in recent years and is seeking help from the community to fill in the gaps.

School Human Resources Director Liz Fischer had the idea to ask businesses to allow their employees to be subs. The informational meeting is for businesses and for anyone else who is interested.

Anyone with a four-year college degree is eligible to be an on-call substitute teacher, who makes $105 a day. The district is also seeking on-call substitutes for paraprofessionals and other positions. In some cases, the minimum requirement is a high school diploma.

At the meeting, Fischer will provide information on the process for obtaining a substitute teacher license. A background check and fingerprinting is required of anyone who will be working with children. The state Department of Education grants the licenses.

The district will provide short training sessions after state licenses are approved.

Those attending the meeting may purchase their own lunch if they want. Fischer said that RSVPs are appreciated, so the district can reserve enough space.
