Public invited to annual meeting of Willmar Community-Owned Grocery on August 14

WILLMAR — The Willmar Community-Owned Grocery is conducting its annual meeting from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. August 14 at the grocery’s new location next to Westside Liquor in Willmar.

Everyone from the community is invited for free desserts and beverages, a question-and-answer session with the board of directors and to hear some general project updates from the board.

The Willmar Community-Owned Grocery cooperative plans to open a full-service grocery store offering local foods. The cooperative is currently working on raising membership and funds to construct and open the store sometime in 2015, according to COG spokeswoman Claudia Broman.

Three board members are up for election at this year’s annual meeting. President Russ Bennett, Vice President Mary Catherwood and Treasurer Jana Palmquist are all running for another three-year term in their current positions. The board of directors will also ask members to ratify Marv Calvin’s appointment to the board to fill in for the final two years for a board member who recently stepped down.

While the public is invited to the meeting, voters must be members of COG, which requires a one-time $200 investment in the cooperative. Current membership is around 650 members and project organizers have set a goal to have 700 members by the end of the summer and 1,000 by opening day, according to a recent news release.
