Organizers feel this year’s fair is on a par with past successes

WILLMAR — Final figures won’t be tallied for a few days, but organizers of the 2014 Kandiyohi County Fair feel they had a great fair this year.

The fair closed Saturday night at the fairgrounds in northern Willmar.

Some rain Saturday was the only bad weather during the four-day event, which has enjoyed a string of several years with favorable weather, fair board president Darrell Fostervold said Sunday afternoon.

Attendance figures are likely to show that the fair, while it may not have set a record, had very good attendance.

Food vendors reported having record sales, and many attractions drew big crowds.

“Everybody filled up,” he said. Bull riding was popular, and so were other grandstand shows. The livestock shows were well attended, and the lines were consistently long for the Dairy Association’s real ice cream and milk shakes.

“We had a sea of people” for nightly drawings for $1,000 prizes, he added.

A popular new attraction this year was the BMX Bike Stunt Show. “The crowds just grew,” he said. “We heard, ‘You’ve got to have them back.’”

Fair board members got requests to bring back some of the musical entertainment, too, he said, and they do listen to those requests.

While fair boards used to wait until spring to plan the next fair’s attractions, the planning starts much earlier now. “We’re already talking about next year,” Fostervold said.

This year’s fair was peaceful, too, Fostervold said. One lost child was found fairly quickly, and there were no problems that required law enforcement involvement. EMTs were on hand to handle the few health issues that arose for fairgoers.
