Fee to obtain birth certificates will increase July 1
WILLMAR -- The cost of getting a certified copy of a birth certificate will increase $10 starting July 1.
The fee increase, as well as changes to other vital statistics services performed by the county recorder, was the result of action taken during the 2010 legislative session.
Currently it costs $16 to get a certified copy of a birth certificate. Starting July 1, the fee will increase to $26.
Additional certified copies of the same birth certificate that are ordered at the same time as the first copy will also have a $10 surcharge for a new cost of $19.
Kandiyohi County Recorder Julie Kalkbrenner said the $10 state surcharge will be forwarded to the commissioner of management and budget for deposit in the general fund.
Marriage licenses will also cost more.
Effective July 1 a marriage license full fee will increase by $5 to a new rate of $115.
The new $5 state surcharge will be forwarded to the state to assist in paying for the "couples on the brink" program.
The reduced marriage license fee with an educator's statement will remain the same at $40 and is now able to either be notarized or under the church seal. The statement must be presented at the time of application for the marriage license and in the format outlined in statute, including the full legal names of the couple; dated and signed by the educator; notarized or under church seal; and appear on the educator's letterhead.
Starting Aug. 1, the notary filing fee will decrease from $100 to $20 at the county level, said Kalkbrenner.
The county is no longer responsible for collecting the state's fee of $80. That fee will now be included at the time of application for the notary commission and will be paid directly to the state.
