Kandiyohi Co. Board: Madsen and Cunningham moving on in District 5 race

John Cunningham, left, and Harlan Madsen

Harlan Madsen and John Cunningham will appear on the general election ballot for the Kandiyohi County Board seat from District 5.

With all precincts reporting in Tuesday's primary, Mad-sen, the incumbent, led John Cunningham, 613 to 335, a margin of 59 percent to 32 percent. Ron Sammons had 97 votes, or 9 percent.

Madsen and Cunningham will go on to the general election for the seat representing the southern portion of the county. Sammons' third-place showing eliminates him from the race.

Madsen, a dairy and crop farmer from Lake Lillian, was first elected to the County Board in 1994.

Cunningham, a farmer from Atwater, is currently a member of the Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City School Board. Sammons is a machine shop foreman from Atwater.

Reached late Tuesday evening, Madsen said he was pleased with the trend shown in the primary results.

Cunningham said he was pleased, as well, and he was looking forward to campaigning. "We'll have at 'er then until November," he said.

Sammons could not be reached Tuesday night.

Madsen said he has been visiting with voters about the state's budget deficit and its impact on local government. County governments will need to partner with public and private organizations to deliver services, he said.

"We need coalitions and we need strong leadership," he said. "We also have to acknowledge that each of us ... are going to have to adjust; we're going to have to accept less of some things."

As he campaigns, the state budget and its effect on the county and its residents are the main issue people bring up to him, he said. Other people have questions about the welfare system and about corrections. Many are also are interested in maintaining the county's infrastructure, especially the farm-to-market roads in the area, he said.
