MnDOT reports opening for intersection on Highway 71 delayed

WILLMAR -- The opening of the newly redesigned intersection on North Business 71 near the Health and Human Services Building in Willmar is being held up.

The Minnesota Department of Transportation had planned to open the intersection sometime this week, according to Diane Beck, public af-fairs coordinator for MnDOT's District 8 headquarters in Willmar. But a problem with the manufacturer of the traffic signs will delay the opening.

Kandiyohi County Public Works Director Gary Danielson told the County Commissioners on Tuesday that the road is "all striped and looks like it's ready for traffic."

But crucial signage that will direct traffic through the unique system of turning lanes has not arrived.

Danielson said the subcontractor who had won the bid to make the signs was unable to fulfill the order, but apparently did not inform the contractor who spent the last week and a half trying to track down the subcontractor and the signs.

A new manufacturer is providing the signs, but it's unknown when they will be delivered and installed.

He's optimistic the issue will be resolved soon and the road could be opened. But he said there's "no definitive word on that."

Beck also said there's no firm opening date.
