Willmar, Minn., Utilities GM search to be discussed at meeting Tuesday

WILLMAR -- The Willmar Municipal Utilities Commission is expected to act Tuesday to launch a search for a new general manager.

According to the advance agenda for the meeting, commissioners are expected to act on a recommendation from the Labor Committee to engage Springsted Inc. of St. Paul to conduct the search for a general manager.

The utility commissioners previously contracted with the consulting firm to prepare the general manager's job description, and that was approved May 14.

Commissioners had discussed at the May 14 meeting whether a firm with more industry expertise would be better suited to handle the search, but the Labor Committee met later and voted to recommend Springsted handle the search, according to the meeting minutes to be submitted Tuesday.

Former general manager Bruce Gomm was terminated on Feb. 27 after an investigation. Since the middle of December when the investigation began, the utility has been operating with customer service supervisor Larry Heinen and staff electrical engineer Wesley Hompe serving as interim co-managers.

Springsted Inc. also has been conducting an organizational assessment study. A draft was reviewed May 14 but no action was taken. The review and discussion of that final report is on Tuesday's agenda. A copy is posted online at

The commissioners will meet at 11:45 a.m. Tuesday in the Municipal Utilities Auditorium, 700 Litchfield Ave. S.W in Willmar. Monday is a holiday.
