Disabled man's bicycle stolen in Willmar, Minn.

WILLMAR -- Between 4 p.m. Friday and 4 p.m. Monday, a bicycle was taken from a group home at 208 Terrace Drive Southwest in Willmar. The bicycle belongs to Brian Gort, 37, who is mentally handicapped.

The orange bike isn't an ordinary bike. It has two seats side by side, one wheel in the front and two wheels in the back.

"It's the only kind of bike he can ride as he is unable to pedal or steer," said Margaret Gort, Brian's mother.

Riding the bike with a staff member at the group home is often Brian's first choice after completing workshops.

"Brian's life is so limited by his disability and this was one way for him to get out," Margaret said.

We rode it all the time when we lived in Willmar, she said. People will recognize it.

Margaret and her husband bought the bike 32 years ago when Brian was 5 years old. They purchased the bike for about $150, but now similar bikes cost more than $1,500.

"It's irreplaceable," she said. "Brian has very few freedoms due to his disability and this theft takes away yet another of his limited freedoms."

Brian Gort's group home filed a police report at about 6:30 p.m. Monday, but the bike has not turned up.

If anyone has any information about the stolen bike, please contact Margaret Gort at 320-593-7370 or 320-282-7716 or the Willmar Police Department at 320-235-2244.
